Synopsis
Every morning, architect Joh Sung-yong takes the subway from the Asian Games Village Apartment to his office. He designed the Asian Games Village Apartment in 1983 and became famous in Korean architecture for his remarkable design. For him, the apartment is a form of house that represents modern urban life. In 2017, Joh took on the challenge of designing the apartment again. In a design competition to rebuild a huge apartment complex in Jamsil, Joh's design won first prize. Soon after, however, residents picketed against him, claiming that his design would lower the value of their homes. Is Joh's vision of apartments as social housing impossible in Korean society? Still determined to defend his principle, Joh Sung-yong begins a long struggle that he cannot give up.
매일 아침 아시아선수촌 아파트, 조성룡은 지하철을 타고 건축사무소로 출근한다. 1983년 아시아선수촌 아파트 설계안이 1등으로 당선되면서 그는 건축계에 이름을 알렸다. 지금도 자신이 설계한 아파트에 사는 그에게 아파트는 도시의 삶을 대표하는 집이다. 2017년, 조성룡은 다시 한번 아파트 설계에 도전한다. 잠실의 대단지 아파트 재건축설계공모. 이 공모에서 조성룡의 설계안은 1등으로 당선된다. 하지만 곧이어 주민들은 ‘조성룡 반대’라는 피켓을 만든다. 그의 설계안이 투자 가치를 떨어트린다는 이유로. 조성룡이 그리는 공동 주택으로서의 아파트는 한국 사회에서는 불가능한걸까? 여전히 자신의 철학을 지키고 싶은 조성룡은 포기할 수 없는 긴 싸움을 시작한다.
