Synopsis
In Brooklyn, there is a unique immigrant community calling themselves 'Korean.' Their ancestors were forcibly relocated by Stalin in 1937 from the Russian Far East to Central Asia and became known as “Koryo-saram”. Decades later, when the Soviet Union collapsed, they undertook a second migration to New York for survival. How Come We Ended Up Here? traces their complex trajectories through 16mm film and vivid oral interviews. The faces of various generations intersect, including 85-year-old Agafya, diner owner Lilia, barber Maksim, and 16-year-old Michelle. The new crisis of anti-immigrant sentiment shakes their peaceful daily lives, reawakening buried memories. Ultimately, this film is the story of a small diaspora with a long history of seeking belonging and starting anew.
뉴욕 브루클린에는 스스로를 '고려인'이라 부르는 독특한 이민자 커뮤니티가 있다. 1937년 연해주에서 중앙아시아로 강제 이주당한 이들의 조상은 구소련 붕괴 후 생존을 위해 낯선 대도시 뉴욕으로 두 번째 이주를 감행했다. <어쩌다 우리는 여기까지 오게 됐을까?>는 16mm 필름의 따뜻한 질감과 생생한 구술 인터뷰로 이들의 복잡한 궤적을 쫓는다. 85세 아가피야부터 16세 미셸까지 다양한 세대의 얼굴이 교차하는 가운데, 반이민정서라는 새로운 위기가 이들의 일상을 흔든다. 이 영화는 온전한 소속을 찾아 떠돌면서도 끝내 삶을 다시 시작해 낸 어느 작은 디아스포라 공동체의 이야기다.
