Synopsis
Oh Hyemin arrives an hour ahead of schedule, her car the first to pull into the parking lot. Before the day’s classes begin, this is her private space for reflection. As a feminist teacher at the National University of Arts (K-Arts) for six years, she has taught Introduction to Feminism and Gender Practice for Artists, a course introduced as a mandatory requirement for all freshmen in 2019. She views her classes as both a welcome opportunity and a heavy responsibility. In a political climate where the president calls for the abolition of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, Hyemin endures hostile remarks from a certain percentage of her students, ranging from rude comments in class to outright opposition to learning about feminism. Despite these challenges, she goes to school everyday for the sake of the students who find solace in her class. As her final class draws near in December 2024, Hyemin records a series of videos inside of her car in her parking space, capturing the raw feelings she can no longer keep inside.
예정된 시간보다 한 시간 전, 혜민이 탄 차가 먼저 모습을 드러낸다. 몇 분 뒤 주차된 차는 그녀만의 대기실이 된다. 혜민은 6년째 국립 예술대학에서 페미니즘 관련 수업을 맡은 강사이다. 여성학을 전공한 그녀에게 한국예술종합학교에서 2019년부터 신입생 필수 교과목으로 지정된 <예술가의 젠더연습> 수업은 반가움이자 책임감이다. 대통령이 여성가족부를 폐지해야한다고 발언하는 뉴스가 흘러나오는 시국에서 자신의 수업에 위안을 느끼는 학생들을 위해, 누군가 수업 시간에 무례한 발언을 던져도 강의평가로 페미니즘은 똥이라고 해도 그녀는 참아야만 했다. 2024년 12월, 마지막 수업을 앞둔 혜민은 처음으로 자신의 대기실에서 더이상 외면할 수 없는 마음을 비디오에 남긴다.
Director's Statement
Having studied Women’s Studies myself, I’ve always been cautious of teaching or sometimes even bringing up feminism with larger groups of people. In Korea, the fear of being the target of backlash or attacks is very real. My anxiety increased when the Yoon Seokyeol administration took office in March 2022, backed by a strong “anti-feminist” movement, and announced plans to abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The moment Hyemin, a teacher of feminism at the National University of Arts, shared the story of her inner turmoil with me led me to reflect on myself. How could my desire for a broader world capable of sustaining more diverse relationships end up becoming a source of conflict and hatred? With K-Feminism 101, I aim to speak not just of fear, but of the resilience of hearts that, despite tremors and struggles, go beyond hate.
여성학을 전공한 나에게는 많은 이들을 대상으로 페미니즘 관련 수업을 한다는 것에 대한 두려움이 있다. 언제든 누군가로부터 무례하고, 쉽게 공격받을 수 있다는 두려움. 2022년 3월 윤석열 정부가 ‘여성가족부 폐지’라는 공약을 내세우며 ‘안티페미니스트’ 정체성을 갖는 이들의 강력한 지지로 출범했을 때 나의 두려움은 더욱 커졌다. 국립 예술대학에서 모든 신입생을 대상으로 페미니즘 관련 수업을 하는 혜민이 처음으로 자신의 무너지는 마음을 털어놓았을 때, 나는 외면하고 있던 질문이 떠올랐다. 더 넓은 세상과 다양한 관계를 향한 고민이 왜 공격과 혐오의 대상이 되었을까? 나는 <움직이는 교실>을 통해, 두려움을 넘어 무수한 흔들림에도 꺾이지 않는 마음들에 대해서 말하려고 한다.
