Loop Dreams Review 요요현상 리뷰
It is a record about nerds whose hobby is 'Yoyo.' When they are young, the protagonists found a common talent for dealing with 'Yoyo.' Small attention and praise made them dance. As an adult, hobbies and jobs are considered incompatible. Can't they live on what they like? The small toy, Yoyo, can summarize the worries of young people in today's Korean society.
이 작품은 '요요'라는 기계를 취미로 삼는 덕후에 대한 기록이다. 등장인물들은 공통으로 어린 시절 '요요'라는 놀이 기구를 다루는 재능을 발견한다. 작은 주목과 칭찬은 평범했던 그들을 춤추게 하였다. 성인이 되어 보니 좋아하는 것은 취미라 하고 먹고 사는 것은 직업이라 한다. 둘은 양립하기 어렵다고 지시한다. 좋아하는 것으로 먹고 살 수는 없는 걸까? 작은 '요요'에 한국 사회 청년의 오늘이 응축되었다.

The Korean title of the film, “Yoyo Phenomenon(Loop Dreams)” refers to a group of Korean yoyo players. Everyone wants to live a life doing what he or she likes. Is it possible to make a living with yoyo? As you grow old, you have to find a means of living. At least, that is the norm in Korea. The film, 'Loop Dreams’, focuses on where decisions lead people. The film doesn’t show any ordinary worker who regrets their decision. If they didn’t consider themselves as the best yoyo players, they might have chosen different careers and go to work, missing yoyo from time to time. The film also shows a person who isn’t a member of Yoyo Pheonomenon but runs a yoyo business. His story is interesting, but my gaze is on the members of the group perhaps due to their ceaseless dreams and passion. To me, yoyo has been just game for kids. While I watch them play yoyo, I could see their intense struggle for life. I worry about whether they could make a living with yoyo. In the end, their life journey is separated. I can’t say whose path I support more. My support won’t make any difference anyway. However, I must admit that I came to love them. Who wouldn’t do that for their passion and struggle?
영화의 제목인 ‘요요현상’은 한국에서 요요를 제일 잘 다루던 사람들이 결성한 그룹의 이름이다. 누구나 그러하듯 그들도 좋아하는 것을 하면서 살기를 원한다. 그런데 요요를 직업으로 삼을 수 있을까? 나이를 먹는 것은 자기 몸으로 먹고살 일을 마련해야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 적어도 한국에서는 그러하다. <요요현상>은 그들의 선택이 어떤 삶으로 이어지는 과정을 바라본 작품이다. 평범한 직장인의 삶을 선택했다고 해서 곧장 후회하는 모습 따위는 여기에 나오지 않는다. 자신이 요요의 일인자가 아니라고 생각했다면 다른 직업인으로서 삶에 충실할 것이고, 혹은 여전한 미련으로 가끔 요요를 바라보며 직장에 다닐 수도 있다. 영화는 요요현상의 멤버는 아니지만 요요 사업을 다각적으로 펼치는 한 인물을 따로 다루기도 한다. 그들의 이야기도 흥미롭지만 내 눈길은 요요와의 끈을 놓치지 않는 두 인물에게 머물 수밖에 없다. 아무래도 꿈을 따르는 걸음에 동감한 모양이다. 요요를 아이들의 놀이로 생각했던 내게, 두 사람이 요요와 일체가 되어 노니는 모습이 어느 순간부터 치열한 삶의 풍경처럼 보이기 시작한다. 저걸로 잘 살 수 있을까, 괜스레 걱정하게 된다. 마침내 두 사람의 삶의 여정도 다시 갈라진다. 여기서 누구의 길을 더 지지하느니, 그런 같잖은 표현은 하지 않으려고 한다. 내가 지지한다고 해서 달라질 일은 없다. 다만 영화를 보는 동안 그들이 참 사랑스러워졌다. 열심히 투쟁하는데 어찌 안그렇겠나.

Five young men fascinated by yo-yo since childhood speak about what yo-yo means in their lives. Would it be possible for today’s young generation to keep their teenage hobbies into adulthood? At the crossroads of reality and what they want, some incorporate yo-yo into their lives, while others drop the hobby and go on to live new lives. This portrait of young generation captured through the lens of yo-yo resonates with the audience sometimes with humor, and sometimes with a more serious tone.
어린시절부터 요요에 매료되어 요요와 더불어 학창시절을 보낸 다섯 명의 청년이 여전히 각자의 방식으로 자신의 삶 속에 자리한 요요의 의미를 이야기한다. 좋아하는 일을 어른이 되어서도 자신의 삶 속에 구현할 수 있는 방식이 오늘날의 청년 세대에게 가능하기는 한 일일까. 현실과 취향 사이, 누군가는 요요를 자신의 삶 속으로 끌어들이고, 누군가는 요요를 뒤로 하고 새로운 삶을 살아간다. 누군가에게는 사소한 취미일 수도 있는 요요를 통해 바라보는 청년 세대의 자화상이 때로는 유쾌하고 때로는 진지하게 관객들의 마음을 파고든다.

Teenagers who had fun with yo-yo become adults. They can no longer live by yo-yo. Then some protagonists don't do yo-yo, some just enjoy it as a hobby, and some try to make a living by doing yo-yo. Loop Dreams" shows the points of conflict when "young day's dream", symbolized by "yo-yo", meets "real life". The movie is not just a special story of the characters, but a kind of growing pain that everyone in the audience has experienced or will experience in the future. A serious theme, but an attitude that does not lose humor, is an important virtue of the film.
그저 요요가 좋아 살아가던 청소년들은 어느덧 청년이 되어, 더 이상 요요만 하며 살아갈 수 없게 된다. 그러면서 누군가는 요요를 하지 않고, 누군가는 그저 취미로 즐기고, 누군가는 요요를 하며 살아가려 한다. ‘요요’로 상징되는 ‘젊은 날의 꿈’이 ‘현실’과 부딪힐 때 그 충돌의 지점들을 짚어가는 <요요 현상>은 그들만의 특수한 이야기가 아니라 우리 모두 겪었던 혹은 어떤 이에겐 앞으로 겪게 될, 일종의 성장통에 대한 이야기다. 진지한 테마지만 유머를 잃지 않는 태도는 이 영화의 중요한 미덕이다.

(...) 'Loop Dreams' is not just about watching the seesaw game of dreams and reality. In Act 1, the reality of the main characters was a dream. In Act 2, their dreams are suspended in front of reality. In Act 3, her reality and dreams often collide. Instead of rushing to judgment, the movie keeps asking the audience questions. Some stop yo-yoing, others continue yo-yoing. Did someone give up their dream and someone else get caught up in it? In the second half of the film, yo-yo is no longer a pronoun for dreams. None of the protagonists conclude that yo-yo is all about them. They, whose yo-yo was life, all know that life is a huge yo-yo. That's why Hyun-woong is positive about Dae-yeol's choice. Either Dong-gun, who has given up on yo-yo, or Hyun-woong, who cannot let go of yo-yo, are on the streets of life. The further away the five friends go, the closer they get to each other. Loop Dreams" doesn't classify their lives according to the familiar confrontation between dreams and reality. The film respects their determination to protect the small universe as it is.
(...) <요요현상>은 꿈과 현실의 시소게임을 곁에서 지켜보는 것으로 그치지 않는다. 현실이 곧 꿈이었던 1막과 현실 앞에서 꿈을 유예한 2막, 현실과 꿈이 수시로 부딪치는 3막이 끝난 뒤에도 영화는 섣불리 판단하는 대신 질문을 거듭한다. 누군가는 요요를 그만뒀고, 누군가는 요요를 지속한다. 그렇다면 누군가는 꿈을 포기하고, 누군가는 꿈에 붙들렸나. 미리 말하지만, 후반부에서 요요는 더는 꿈의 대명사가 아니다. 이들 중 누구도 요요가 자신의 모든 것이라고 단정하지 않는다. 요요가 삶이었던 그들은 콕 집어 말하지 않아도 삶이 거대한 요요임을 다들 알고 있다. 대열의 선택에 대해 현웅이 긍정하는 것도 그래서다. 요요에서 등 돌린 동건의 함성과 요요를 놓지 못하는 현웅의 침묵 모두 삶의 거리에 있지 않은가. 다섯 친구는 그렇게 멀어질수록 더더욱 가까워진다. <요요현상>은 꿈과 현실이라는 익숙한 대립 구도에 따라 인물들의 삶을 줄 세우지 않고, 작은 우주를 지켜내려는 그들의 안간힘을 있는 그대로 존중한다.

(...) 'Loop Dreams' captures the truth of life in detail, that you can't always be happy just because you have the courage to choose what you like. The camera has the virtue of focusing more on life after each choice. Loop Dreams' is a metaphor for five people who travel indefinitely between dreams and reality through yo-yo.
(...) <요요현상>은 좋아하는 것을 택하는 용기를 냈다고 해서 늘 행복할 순 없다는 인생의 진리를 세밀하게 포착한다. 카메라는 각자의 선택 이후에 펼쳐지는 삶에 더욱 집중하는 미덕을 갖췄다. <요요현상>의 영제는 <Loop Dreams>. 요요를 매개로 꿈과 현실 사이를 무한히 오가는 다섯 사람을 은유하는 제목이다.

(...) The movie is more a chronicle of recorded images than of brilliant techniques such as flamboyant typography or fast and sensual editing. The scene of the yo-yo technique, which is close to novelty, is enough to attract the audience's attention when the candid interview screen is boring. As time goes by, the tension builds in the unexpected moves that the characters choose. It makes me wonder what kind of ending will come out in the end. Such a simple production gives the video its own reality. And the authenticity of their stories makes it more trustworthy to the audience. It is interesting and valuable enough. However, after a longer period of time, I have no doubt that it will have more significance as a sociological and historical material that sincerely records the reality and culture of ordinary young people in Korea in the 2010s.
(...) 영화는 현란한 타이포그래피나 빠르고 감각적인 편집 같은 화려한 기교보다는 기록된 영상들을 연대기적으로 이어나간다. 솔직한 인터뷰 화면이 지루하다고 느낄 때쯤 한 번씩 끼어드는 신기에 가까운 요요기술 장면은 관객의 이목을 집중시키기에 부족함이 없다. 시간이 흐를수록 인물들이 선택하는 의외의 행보에 긴장감이 쌓이고 종국에는 어떤 결말을 내놓게 될지 궁금하게 만든다. 이런 담백한 연출은 영상에 나름의 현실성을 부여하고, 그들의 이야기에 담보된 진실성을 더욱 신뢰하게 만든다.
충분히 재미있고 가치도 있는 작품이지만 더 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤 2010년대 대한민국 보통 젊은이들의 현실과 문화의 일면을 진솔하게 기록한 사회학, 역사학적 자료로서 더 큰 의미를 갖게 될 작품임을 의심치 않는다.
충분히 재미있고 가치도 있는 작품이지만 더 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤 2010년대 대한민국 보통 젊은이들의 현실과 문화의 일면을 진솔하게 기록한 사회학, 역사학적 자료로서 더 큰 의미를 갖게 될 작품임을 의심치 않는다.
