Synopsis
Joh Sung-yong is an architect in his 80s who still draws architectural plans with a pencil. His office is filled with books, vinyl records, and video tapes that he has collected throughout his life. He believes that old things are not burdens to be thrown away, but time and memories to be cherished. To him, rebuilding an old house is an important opportunity to showcase his philosophy to the world. The reconstruction of a large apartment complex in Jamsil in 2017 presented an opportunity for Joh Sung-yong. He designed the apartments to recycle the old building and preserve the trees in the complex. However, his plans were rejected due to conflicts with the reconstruction association, which prioritized profit. In 2023, he was approached by a new client who wanted to rebuild the Cheongdam-dong house he designed 40 years earlier. Joh Sung-yong is facing the challenge of designing what could be his final project as an architect. He is attempting to create a solution to preserve the persimmon tree that has been growing alongside the building for four decades.
연필로 건축 설계 도면을 그리는 80대의 건축가, 조성룡이 있다. 조성룡 너머로 보이는 사무실의 박스에는 그가 평생 수집해 온 각종 책과 LP판, 비디오 테이프 등이 넘쳐난다. 오래된 물건은 그에게 버려야 하는 짐이 아니라 간직해야 할 시간이자 기억들이다. 그런 그에게 낡은 집을 재건축하는 일은 피할 수 없는 숙명이자 그의 철학을 세상에 드러낼 중요한 기회이기도 하다. 2017년 잠실의 마지막 주공 아파트의 재건축도 그런 기회 중 하나였다. 조성룡은 낡은 건물을 재활용하고 단지 안 나무들을 남기는 방식으로 아파트를 설계했지만, 결국 이윤을 우선시하는 재건축조합과의 갈등으로 그의 설계안은 무산되어 버린다. 낙심한 그에게 2023년, 새로운 주택의 재건축 의뢰가 들어온다. 그가 40년 전 설계한 청담동 주택을 새롭게 짓고 싶다는 제안이었다. 조성룡은 자신의 생애 마지막 프로젝트일지도 모르는 건물의 설계에 도전하고, 그 건물과 40년을 함께 해온 감나무를 어떻게든 살리고 싶어 한다.
